If you are considering a move to Geelong, this page helps you compare suburbs, transport, housing costs and local services by the address you are considering.
Geelong’s location and council area
Geelong is a regional city in Victoria. The City of Greater Geelong is the local government area (LGA), or council area. It covers central Geelong, surrounding suburbs, townships and coastal communities. The City of Greater Geelong’s maps and local area information show council boundaries and individual localities.
The 2021 Census counted 271,057 people in the City of Greater Geelong LGA. This figure covers the full council area, not central Geelong alone. The ABS Census tools also provide household and dwelling figures for a selected area and Census year.
For hospital locations and local health services, use Barwon Health.
Choose a suburb around your routine
Choose an address based on the trips you expect to make each week. Geelong includes suburbs and townships such as Geelong West, Newtown, Belmont, Highton, Corio, Lara and Ocean Grove. A suburb name does not show the time, route or transport connections involved in a daily trip.
Compare each address with your workplace, school or campus. Check the full journey to each, as well as to shops, health services and regular activities. Map distance alone gives an incomplete picture.
Check transport before moving
V/Line trains connect Geelong and Melbourne, and local buses serve parts of the region. Check current routes and timetables through Public Transport Victoria and V/Line before relying on a connection.
Plan the trip for the time you expect to travel. Bus coverage, service frequency and transfer times vary by route and address.
Compare housing by address
Rent and sale prices vary between suburbs and individual properties. Compare current listings for the addresses you are considering. Then weigh travel costs and parking, along with access to everyday services.
Renters should read Victoria’s official renting information on leases, bonds, repairs and condition reports before signing.
Find local services
The City of Greater Geelong provides information on waste collection, libraries and community facilities through its service pages. Check the arrangements for the address you are considering, as collection services and nearby facilities depend on location.
Whether an address works depends on your regular trips and the transport available when you make them. Check access to schools and services too, and compare all three before committing to a move.
Choosing a suburb
Compare specific addresses in central Geelong, Belmont, Newtown, Highton, Waurn Ponds, Lara and Ocean Grove rather than relying on suburb-wide impressions. Use the City of Greater Geelong’s maps and local information to confirm the locality, nearby facilities and council services for each address.
Check each address against your workplace, campus or school with the PTV Journey Planner. Enter the exact address and the times you expect to travel. Compare total travel time, service frequency, transfers and the walk to stops or stations. A home in a suburb with a train station or bus route may still involve a long walk, an infrequent service or an awkward transfer.
Central Geelong puts residents close to Geelong Station, shops, health services and public facilities. This reduces the need for local travel. Homes farther from the centre need closer checks of bus connections, station access and transfers. Bus services connect Geelong Station with parts of Newtown and Highton, while Lara Station serves Lara. PTV route 56 runs through Ocean Grove, including Ocean Grove Market Place. Check the planner for your intended travel date because routes, stops and timetables change. In Belmont and Waurn Ponds, assess the exact address rather than assuming a nearby service will suit the trip.
If school access matters, use Victoria’s Find my School tool to identify the designated neighbourhood government school for an address. Contact the school before committing to a property to confirm enrolment requirements and places for any out-of-zone application. Non-government schools set their own enrolment rules.
Check the services residents use at home before signing a lease or buying. Council address information shows rubbish and recycling collection, along with parking rules. It also lists library locations and other local arrangements. Living near central services generally shortens errands and public-transport connections, while addresses farther out may require more travel.
Getting around Geelong
Compare the full trip from your address to the places you use regularly. Account for the walk to the stop or station and the wait, along with any transfers. Include the trip from the final stop to your destination. Use the V/Line journey planner for current regional train and coach routes, fares and scheduled travel times. Use the PTV Journey Planner for local bus travel.
V/Line trains connect Geelong and Melbourne, but total travel time depends on your starting point, destination and service. Compare train and driving routes using the same addresses, particularly if your Melbourne workplace is beyond Southern Cross Station. A travel time of “about an hour” does not include the route, departure time or travel at either end.
Before travelling, check V/Line live disruptions for planned works and service changes affecting your route and date.
A car suits regular trips between suburbs and to regional destinations when public transport connections are indirect or infrequent. Train and bus travel suit addresses near routes that serve your workplace, school, shops and health services.
Housing costs and council rates
Use the Greater Geelong housing monitor for local housing figures. State the measure, geography and period beside every price or rent figure. For Census comparisons, use the ABS Census data tools and identify the Census year and area. Housing-monitor figures and Census data measure different things over different periods, so neither represents a current advertised rent or asking price.
Council rates are calculated using a property valuation. The City of Greater Geelong bases rates on Capital Improved Value, which includes the land and buildings or other improvements. It does not estimate a property’s sale price.
For the 2026–27 rating year, the council reports a 2.75% overall rate increase. Its 2026 revaluation lifted residential property values by an average of 1.67% from the 2025 revaluation. These figures apply only within the City of Greater Geelong for 2026–27. An owner’s bill depends on the property valuation and the charges attached to that property. Check the council’s valuation and rates information.
Renters should compare total weekly housing costs, including utilities and travel to work, school and regular services. A lower advertised rent can cost more when it requires extra driving, parking fees or longer public-transport trips.
Owners should check every charge on the rates notice. Alongside rates based on Capital Improved Value, the notice may include a municipal charge and waste-service charges. Amounts vary by property and services provided. Consult the City of Greater Geelong’s current rates information before setting a budget.
