In this guide

If you fly into Launceston, JUCY, Britz and maui do not offer campervan pickup or return there. Britz and maui list Hobart as their Tasmanian depot. JUCY has no Tasmanian depot and says its vehicles can reach Tasmania by ferry from the mainland.

You’ll need to arrange pickup elsewhere. The comparison covers listed vehicles, travel conditions and charges as at 18 October 2026.

Where JUCY, Britz and maui operate

Brand Launceston pickup or return Tasmania pickup Vehicle classes listed for Australia
JUCY No branch listed No current Tasmanian branch. Its six listed Australian locations are on the mainland. 2-berth Coaster; 4-berth Crib+ and Condo; 2-berth Cloudbreak and Malibu; 4-berth Sunseeker; 6-berth Big Kahuna
Britz No branch listed Hobart branch at 14 Long Street, Cambridge, near Hobart Airport 2-berth HiTop and Trailblazer; 4-berth Voyager; 4WD models including Maverick and Warrior
maui No branch listed Hobart branch at 14 Long Street, Cambridge 2-berth Ultima; 2+1-berth Ultima Plus; 4-berth Cascade and Beach; 6-berth Sunset and River

Vehicle availability depends on the location, dates and booking. The brands’ Australian fleet lists do not guarantee that a particular model is available from Hobart.

For a Hobart pickup, maui says its branch is about 0.4 km from Hobart Airport and 18.8 km from Hobart city. It does not provide an airport or city transfer. The listed hours are 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily, and maui requires pickup and return at least one hour before closing. Its branch page lists Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Australia Day as closure days. Good Friday is also listed, including 26 March 2027. Check the hours that apply to your travel date before arranging transport.

Britz also lists its Hobart branch at 14 Long Street, Cambridge, and describes it as being at Hobart Airport, a short walk from the international terminal. Neither Hobart branch is a Launceston pickup point. Do not assume either company will collect passengers at Launceston Airport or transfer a campervan there.

One-way hire and ferry travel

JUCY says one-way hire is available between most of its branches, with a relocation fee possible. That general offer does not establish a Launceston route or a Tasmania one-way booking: the company lists no local branch in either place. JUCY permits travel to Tasmania by ferry but says on-road support and vehicle recovery on the island may be more limited since its Hobart branch closed in May 2025.

Britz supports one-way travel between branches in its general information, subject to the route and hire conditions. Its published material does not confirm a specific Hobart one-way route or fee for your dates, so use the booking quote to establish whether the itinerary is available and what it costs.

maui publishes Australian one-way fees of AU$200 for qualifying routes between Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide. Routes involving Darwin, Broome, Alice Springs or Perth carry a published fee of AU$300. These route groups do not establish that every vehicle and date is available. The listed fees rise from 1 April 2027 to AU$205 and AU$310 respectively.

If you take a mainland-hired vehicle to Tasmania, maui’s Hobart branch information directs customers to book the Spirit of Tasmania ferry themselves and have the vehicle length ready. It estimates the drive from Devonport to Hobart at about 3 hours 30 minutes. Confirm ferry availability, vehicle dimensions and the rental company’s permission before booking the crossing.

Age, licence and liability

The minimum hire age is not stated for any of the three brands. Check the agreement that applies to your pickup date and vehicle before paying, including any age-related terms.

JUCY’s general information says drivers need a full English-language licence or an approved translation. Britz requires a current, full motor-vehicle licence; a licence that is not in English needs an international driving permit or an accredited English translation. maui’s licence requirements are not stated clearly enough to summarise.

A bond or liability deposit is money held against the hirer’s responsibility for damage; an excess is the amount the hirer may have to pay under the selected liability cover. No current bond or excess amounts are stated for these brands. An old figure or booking deposit is not a substitute for either amount. maui’s Hobart page lists a AU$250 booking deposit, with the balance due 30 days before pickup. For bookings made less than 30 days before pickup, it requires full payment at booking. That payment schedule does not state the liability deposit or excess.

Britz and maui publish Australian rental agreements for pickup dates from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, alongside later agreement versions. Use the agreement matching your pickup date and the amounts in your quote to check the age rule, bond and excess.

Tasmania road restrictions

Britz sets different Tasmania rules for 2WD and 4WD campers. Its published restrictions say a Britz 2WD vehicle needs permission to travel to islands reached by ferry, and Bruny Island also requires permission. Britz says its 2WD campers can travel on sealed roads on islands once On-Road Assist grants permission at pickup. Its restrictions list Tasmania as a destination requiring permission for Britz 4WD vehicles. Travelling into a restricted area without permission may void the liability option if damage or an accident occurs.

The Tasmania road restrictions for maui and JUCY are not set out in enough detail here to compare with Britz’s rules. Do not assume the same island, road or permission conditions apply across brands. Before booking, give the provider your intended route, including any island or unsealed-road travel, and obtain the relevant approval for that vehicle.

Charges to compare before booking

maui lists a AU$125 Hobart pickup fee, rising to AU$130 from 1 April 2027. Its FAQ also lists a AU$125 public-holiday surcharge for rentals picked up and/or dropped off on an observed public holiday at the relevant location. These charges are separate from any one-way fee and from the booking deposit.

The published terms do not give a current Launceston or Hobart one-way fee for Britz or JUCY, or current bond and excess amounts for any of the three. Compare the full quote for your pickup date. Check location charges, one-way fees and holiday surcharges, along with the liability options. For maui, also distinguish its published one-way fee from the Hobart pickup fee.
