Directory of Australian travel operators and airport branches

Car-rental counters inside Adelaide Airport

Car-rental counters inside Adelaide Airport

In this guide

When comparing airport transport in Australia, distinguish an operator’s national network from its local branches and vehicle collection points. An airport counter is where you complete the rental; a shuttle pickup point is where you board a vehicle to a separate depot.

Using official operator and airport information, the directory covers car hire and scheduled airport transfers. It separates branch locations from counter and pickup arrangements and does not list live availability, opening hours or prices.

Australian car-hire networks

These operators publish Australian location directories. A listing establishes a branch or network presence, but the airport’s own page or the operator’s page for that specific branch is needed to identify where customers collect a vehicle.

Operator Network evidence What the airport evidence establishes
Avis Its Australian locations directory lists airport and city branches across states and territories. Sydney Airport has terminal-specific instructions. Avis also publishes a dated change to its Sydney domestic arrangements.
Budget Its Australian locations directory lists airport and city branches across states and territories. Sydney Airport has terminal-specific instructions, including a dated change to domestic arrangements.
SIXT Its Australian airport and branch directory lists airport locations nationwide. SIXT states that it has 43 Australian airport locations; this is the company’s figure. Melbourne Airport names SIXT among the operators with counters in the airport precinct.
Europcar Its Australian directory lists airport and city locations, with individual pages for airports including Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney Airport and Europcar provide location-specific details. Melbourne Airport places its rental counters in the T123 car park.
Hertz Hertz’s Australian corporate-locations directory lists airport and city branches in multiple states. Sydney Airport provides location-specific instructions for Hertz.
Thrifty and Dollar Sydney Airport identifies both brands in its car-rental information. Their Sydney domestic pickup and drop-off arrangements are on Ross Smith Avenue in the South-East Sector. International-terminal directions differ.
Enterprise Sydney Airport includes Enterprise among providers passengers can search and compare. The airport listing confirms provider presence, but does not establish the precise counter or vehicle collection point.
Redspot Redspot’s locations directory lists airport, metropolitan and regional branches, including Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle, Port Macquarie and Darwin. Its Sydney pages distinguish the terminal desk from the vehicle yard. At Sydney Domestic, the desk is inside the terminal and a shuttle takes customers to the car-holding yard.

For any booking, use the operator’s page for the specific airport and compare it with the airport’s transport information. Do not infer a terminal counter, vehicle location or shuttle arrangement from a nationwide directory entry.

Sydney Airport car-hire arrangements

Sydney Airport’s car-rental page describes different arrangements by terminal and operator. It places Avis and Budget at the international terminal and gives separate domestic-terminal directions. Europcar also has different instructions for T1 International and T2/T3 Domestic. Hertz, Thrifty and Dollar have international-terminal instructions, while their domestic pickup and drop-off point is on Ross Smith Avenue in the South-East Sector. Redspot’s international counter is at T1, with its vehicle car park about 200 metres from the terminal.

Avis and Budget publish a domestic change effective 1 December 2025: customers complete the rental agreement at a counter inside T2 or T3, then collect the vehicle at the nearby P1 car park. Their pages also give separate vehicle-return instructions. The operator instructions differ from Sydney Airport’s general domestic directions. For a Sydney domestic rental, follow the relevant operator’s dated instructions and check the airport’s current terminal information before travelling.

Melbourne Airport and regional branches

Melbourne Airport’s car-rental page names Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Redspot and SIXT. It places rental counters on the ground floor of the T123 car park, opposite Terminal 2. The airport’s pages do not give a consistent total number of providers, so the six named operators are a clearer directory entry than an overall count.

The national directories also show airport branches beyond the largest gateways. Avis lists branches in Albury, Ballina and Broome, as well as Cairns, Port Macquarie and Townsville. Budget’s listings cover Armidale, Coffs Harbour and Hervey Bay, plus Port Lincoln and Launceston. SIXT lists Broken Hill, Karratha and Mildura, as well as Roma and Wagga Wagga. Redspot lists branches including Canberra Airport, Newcastle Airport and Port Macquarie Airport. These entries establish airport-branch presence, but not whether a counter is inside the terminal or a shuttle is required.

Airport shuttles and coach services

East Coast Car Rentals publishes airport pickup instructions for Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin and Gold Coast. The instructions also cover Hobart, Launceston, Melbourne, Perth, Sunshine Coast and Sydney. Customers go to a designated shuttle collection point and travel to the rental depot. Treat these locations as airport shuttle pickups to a depot, rather than as airport counters or vehicle collection points.

SkyBus provides scheduled airport transfers; its listings describe services rather than a car-hire branch network. It lists four services from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport, with kerbside airport stops, and also lists services from Avalon Airport and Hobart Airport. Its stop information identifies the relevant boarding point for each service.

Announced Western Sydney Airport branches

Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) is separate from Sydney Airport (SYD). As at 18 October 2026, Avis and Redspot had announced WSI car-hire branches opening on 25 October 2026, so they were not yet operating locations. Avis stated that vehicle collection would be at P1. Confirm the operator’s branch page for the opening status and collection instructions before travelling.
