City Beach has a swimming and surfing beach, lawns, playgrounds, picnic areas and cafés. Walk the coastal promenade towards Floreat Beach, play beach volleyball or join an activity run by the local surf lifesaving club.
Swimming, surfing and beach activities
Swimming, surfing and fishing are among the activities at City Beach. Two rock groynes frame the beach, while the coastal promenade provides a walking route towards neighbouring Floreat Beach. Swimming conditions around the groynes still depend on surf and currents.
The City of Perth Surf Life Saving Club runs patrols and organised surf sports. Club activities range from board and ski paddling to swimming and beach sprints, alongside surf boats and lifesaving competitions. Participation is through an organised club programme; casual walk-up participation is unavailable.
Foreshore facilities
The adjoining foreshore has open lawns, picnic tables, shelters and barbecue areas, as well as playground equipment and an amphitheatre used for events. The Town of Cambridge also lists toilets, lighting, a drinking fountain, exercise equipment and accessible parking.
Beach volleyball courts are available for free public use or exclusive hire. Cafés and restaurants sit within the foreshore precinct, though opening hours vary.
Patrols and swimming safety
The surf club says volunteers patrol 2.5 kilometres of coastline on weekends and public holidays from early October to the end of March. The flagged swimming area is generally at the southern end of City Beach. Patrols do not run every day, and rips can occur, particularly when winter surf is larger. Swim between the flags when the beach is patrolled and follow current beach and water-quality advice.
Accessible beach access
The Town of Cambridge’s Sandcruiser guide describes a beach wheelchair available for free hire during the patrolled season, with hours of 7 am to 4 pm daily from November to March. The Town has also recorded accessible beach matting at City Beach. Confirm current wheelchair booking arrangements and availability with the Town before visiting.
