If you are planning a Kangaroo Island trip, this guide covers how long to allow, how to reach the island and how to plan travel between its widely spaced towns, beaches and parks.
How many days on Kangaroo Island
Allow three to five days for a first visit that includes Kangaroo Island’s eastern towns and western parks. Three days suits a focused itinerary, while five days leaves more time for beaches, wildlife stops and slower drives. Add days for a relaxed pace or longer walks.
Distance shapes the itinerary. Flinders Chase National Park lies about 110 km from Kingscote, or roughly 90 minutes each way via South Coast Road, according to Tourism Kangaroo Island. Penneshaw and Kingscote work well for ferry arrivals spending most of their time in the east and centre, where services are concentrated. If Flinders Chase is a priority, staying farther west reduces repeated long drives. Before booking, check travel times between each property and the places you plan to visit.
A walking-focused visit needs more time. Parks SA describes the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail as a 66 km, five-day walk through Flinders Chase National Park. Confirm the current trail status, access arrangements and park closures with Parks SA before planning your stay around the trail.
Kangaroo Island ferry and flights
SeaLink’s vehicle ferry runs between Cape Jervis on the Fleurieu Peninsula and Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. The crossing of Backstairs Passage takes about 45 minutes. If you are taking a car, include the drive to Cape Jervis, check-in and vehicle loading when choosing a sailing. SeaLink asks passengers to check in at least 30 minutes before departure. When the terminal is closed, the crew handles check-in. Check SeaLink’s live timetable before leaving, as departure times and service conditions vary by date.
As a dated example, SeaLink’s visitor fare page listed one-way fares of A$49 for an adult passenger and from A$99 for a vehicle up to 5 metres, valid until 31 March 2026. Fares vary by departure and demand, so check the current price on SeaLink’s fare page. The page also refers to a temporary fuel surcharge without stating its amount or end date.
Enter your vehicle’s full dimensions when booking, including roof racks and bull bars. SeaLink requires phone bookings for vehicles longer than 5.9 metres and car-and-trailer or caravan combinations longer than 9.9 metres. Travellers taking an electric or hybrid vehicle must declare it when booking.
Flying suits visitors who do not need to bring a vehicle. Rex lists the Adelaide–Kingscote flight time as about 30 minutes. Check Rex’s current Kangaroo Island schedule and fares before planning around a particular flight, and arrange a hire car, transfer or other island transport before relying on air travel.
SeaLink has announced a planned interruption to ferry services from 20 to 22 October 2026 inclusive, subject to weather. The last sailing before the closure is due to leave Cape Jervis at 6 pm on 19 October, and a limited service is planned to resume on 23 October. Check SeaLink’s service update before booking travel for those dates.
From May to September, SeaLink reports sightings of southern right whales from its ferries. Whale season does not indicate weather, sea conditions, ferry capacity or island access on a particular day. Check the current timetable, weather and local access conditions separately before setting out.
Getting around Kangaroo Island
A car gives visitors the most flexibility to reach Kangaroo Island’s spread-out towns, beaches and national parks. Without one, arrange transport or book a guided tour before planning visits beyond the main towns.
Use driving times to set a realistic daily plan. The trip between Kingscote and Flinders Chase National Park takes roughly 90 minutes each way. Allow time for fuel, food, photo stops and changing road conditions rather than trying to cover several distant areas in one day.
Drive carefully, especially at dawn and dusk, when wildlife is more likely to be on the road. Take enough drinking water and snacks for long drives and walks. In Flinders Chase, roads are unsuitable for caravans and trailers. West Bay Campground requires a 4WD, and Parks SA recommends a 4WD for Harvey’s Return Campground. Check the Parks SA Flinders Chase page before leaving for current alerts, road access and closures.
During ferry loading and unloading, follow the crew’s directions. Only drivers may remain on the vehicle deck at those times. Stay seated in rough conditions and supervise children, in line with SeaLink’s onboard guidance.
Seal Bay, Flinders Chase and whales
Seal Bay Conservation Park offers close views of wild Australian sea lions. Guided beach tours take visitors onto the sand near the colony. Visitors who prefer independent access can use the boardwalk and lookout above the beach. Check Parks SA for current entry requirements, tour times and access conditions before travelling.
At Flinders Chase National Park, Remarkable Rocks overlooks the Southern Ocean, while the boardwalk to Admirals Arch looks over a long-nosed fur seal colony. Severe weather, including damaging winds, can close either site. Check the park’s current alerts and access information on the day of your visit.
Southern right whales pass Kangaroo Island during their annual migration from about mid-May to late October. SeaLink reports ferry sightings between May and September, though sightings depend on season and conditions and are never assured.
Allow time for wildlife and the coast: Seal Bay offers a broad beach backed by dunes, while the Flinders Chase coastline has exposed Southern Ocean cliffs. Follow beach signs and local advice before entering the water.
