Getting to Coral Bay

In this guide

Coral Bay is on the Ningaloo Coast in Western Australia, about 1,200 km north of Perth. You can drive, fly to Learmonth Airport and take a transfer or hire car, or catch the Integrity Coachlines coach. Driving is the most flexible; plan an overnight stop on the long route from Perth. Flying cuts the travel time sharply but you need to book ground transport in advance. The coach runs on set days and only stops at Coral Bay if you book that stop. The right choice depends on how much time you have and whether you want your own car at the other end.

Driving from Perth

RAC WA puts the Perth to Coral Bay drive at about 1,121 km and 12 hours before breaks. Coral Bay’s visitor information gives about 1,200 km and suggests Geraldton or Northampton as break points. Treat these as rounded planning figures; the actual time depends on route, breaks and road conditions. The route follows the Brand Highway and North West Coastal Highway north through Geraldton and Carnarvon, then turns west at Minilya onto the Minilya-Exmouth Road and follows the Coral Bay turnoff.

Geraldton is one possible overnight stop, and the visitor information warns that detours to Kalbarri or Monkey Mia add travel time. If you plan to stop overnight, book it before you leave.

Driving from Exmouth or Carnarvon

For travellers already on the Ningaloo Coast, the drive is much shorter. Tourism Australia lists Exmouth to Coral Bay as 153 km and about 1.5 hours. RAC’s route guide gives Carnarvon to Coral Bay as 238 km; allow about 2.5 hours before breaks as a planning estimate, depending on conditions. Learmonth Airport sits about 36 km south of Exmouth and about 120 km north of Coral Bay, according to the Shire of Exmouth. From Carnarvon, the last substantial town on the highway before the turnoff, the route is north on the North West Coastal Highway to Minilya, then west on the Minilya-Exmouth Road to the Coral Bay turnoff.

Flying to Learmonth

Learmonth is the commercial airport for the Exmouth-Coral Bay area, about 120 km north of Coral Bay. Qantas operates passenger services to Learmonth; flight availability and times vary through the year, so check with Qantas for your dates. The Shire of Exmouth identifies Qantas as the carrier to contact and says rental-car booths at the airport are generally staffed during scheduled flight arrivals.

From the airport, you have two ground options. Ningaloo Coral Bay Airport Transfers runs a daily shuttle to Coral Bay, but booking is essential. The published one-way fare, checked 13 October 2026, is $105 per adult and $55 per child aged 0–12, with a minimum of two adult fares to confirm an airport transfer; solo travellers should ask whether other passengers are booked. Luggage beyond one suitcase and one day bag per person needs prior notice, and surcharges can apply on some public holidays or for excess luggage.

Alternatively, hire a car. Availability is not guaranteed for every flight, so reserve directly with the rental company and confirm collection arrangements before you travel.

Coach from Perth

Integrity Coachlines runs scheduled coaches between Perth, Coral Bay, Learmonth Airport and Exmouth. The northbound timetable shows a 7:30 pm departure from Perth, with Coral Bay and Learmonth stops the following day. Coral Bay is an on-request stop, meaning the coach does not automatically pull in unless you have booked that stop, and Learmonth Airport is also on request. The southbound run stops at Exmouth, Learmonth and Coral Bay on the same basis. Service days change, so confirm the date with Integrity Coachlines and book the on-request stop rather than assuming the coach will stop.

Do not assume a flight and coach connect automatically. Check the coach date, the on-request rules and the arrival time against your flight, and arrange any transfer directly.

Fuel, rest stops and road conditions

The drive passes through remote country, so fuel planning matters more than it does on the south-west highways. Coral Bay’s visitor information names Billabong Roadhouse and Overlander Roadhouse on the North West Coastal Highway as fuel options, and Australia’s Coral Coast lists Geraldton, Minilya, Coral Bay and Exmouth as fuel points. Not all of these operate 24 hours, and supply can fluctuate, so confirm opening hours before you rely on a particular stop. FuelWatch publishes current fuel prices across Western Australia, and the Main Roads WA Travel Map shows live closures, restrictions, roadworks and rest areas.

Carry water and supplies for the remote stretches, and check the Travel Map before setting out. The North West cyclone season runs from November to April, according to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, and heavy rain and flooding can close roads without much notice. Tropical Cyclone Narelle crossed the region in late March 2026 and closed the route to Coral Bay via the Minilya-Exmouth Road; the Shire of Exmouth reported road restrictions lifted and Qantas services resumed by early April 2026. Treat dated reports as history and check current conditions on the day you travel.
